Fancy seeing you all the way down here! How’s that scroll wheel holding up?

As soon as I decided that Maxx & co. would be falling to the underworld, I knew that I had to make a comic that was as tall as an entire world in Terraria. Using a hellevator for the first time is an experience that so many Terraria players have shared, and I wanted to capture it as faithfully as I could.

And that’s why I spent 2 weeks drilling a hole through my LoM world, writing a 48-panel comic, and breaking everyone’s Internet with this obnoxiously tall comic!

Some fun facts:

  • This comic’s image is over 58,000 pixels tall, and over 220MB in size.
  • I assembled this comic in GIMP, as Paint refuses to open files of this size.
  • The GIMP file for this comic has over 200 layers – one for every character, text box, and special effect.
  • Terraria’s in-game screenshot feature helped me capture the hellevator, though I still had to stitch about 20 separate images together to create the one you see here.
  • Anyone who can guess what Cyril is referring to by “the signature appetizer at a cheap, American-Australian-themed diner” wins a virtual cookie. So does the person who can guess what the title of this comic is referencing.
