Comic #533: Plan of Attack

There is no such thing as the paradox of collective intelligence. I know this because I spent ages on Google trying to figure out if there was a word for the concept Quollud is talking about. If such a thing does exist, please let me know – I’d love to read up on it!

I seem to like characters explaining things in front of chalkboards. Funny how even this part of my sprite work has gotten significantly better. Who knew?

You might have noticed a fancy new blue link for Top Web Comics below this post. For those of you who don’t know, TWC is a site where people vote on their favorite webcomics each month. A loong time ago, I asked everyone to vote for Legend of Maxx, and we managed to beat out xkcd! So what I’m saying is: if you have a moment, please do me a favor and click on that link, and vote for The Legend of Maxx! You can vote once per day, and your votes help get this comic a lot of exposure! Thank you!

  1. the paradox does sound like a scary and probable thing
    do they not have books
    or writing
or anything that is inherently primitive yet relevant—
    rip lizards

Also Sophia and Su’Quorian would get along well, talking about things no one else understands.

    3. I don’t think what you’re talking about is a paradox, but its an interesting theory! Sounds like something that would happen to me. The more a species as a collective knows, the less the average person knows. Its not like even 1% of the earth understands space travel.

Also if we could refrain from flooding the comment section that would be great. Yes new comics come out every once in a while, you haven’t made a grand discovery. Expressing your excitement in a single comment is alright, but spelling out comic one letter at a time is overdoing it.

      1. Well I don’t even want to be in this comic, Cyril spent an entire year in a desert, every time I’d check in on him he’d just be squeezing moisture out of sandy puddles with his socks. I’m having way more fun teaching every other student I currently have, and one of them is a beetle with a strand of pubic hair for a wand. Interesting fellow that beetle. Let me know when Cyril makes it to the underworld, until then, I’ll be doing other things.

  2. Wow, Jesse, I didn’t realize how much your sprite work has improved. Seems I need to go and read back up on the old comics…

Who knows, maybe inspiration will come my way ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  3. Hey, this came out on my birthday! Also, why doesn’t the molten glass just obey gravity and fill the hole and solidify there?

    1. The molten glass would pour into the lava of the underworld, the remaining sand on the sides would continue to melt until its too far from the flame/jet or whatever the thrusters produce, thus creating a wall of glass.

The Paradox won’t work out for next reasons:
    1) The more you know about the subject, the more you are capable of generalising some topics and sub-knowledge, so you will be able to know even more of it.
    2) More knowledge in civilization means more information will flood your mind since you are kid. Middle age kids didn’t know a thing about metallurgy or astronomy or even widely-used mechanics, but nowadays we already know about other planets and robotics since 3 yo.
    3) Advanced technology means automation and even more time to study or create things
    4) Advanced technology means advanced information storage, means less need to memorise all the things like formulas, in the end you’ll need only general principles in the field of your interest
    5) Advanced technology and science in the end means improving the whole species and individuals, and that means civilization could technologically improve memories and thinking of every individual, or chosen ones like engineers or scientists.

He’s not talking about absolute information; of course the average person knows more than the average person a long time ago.
To simplify it, say that the internet as always been the collective sum of human knowledge.
When it was started, there were 100 bits of information on it, and the average person knew 50, so 50% of all the information.
Now, the average person knows 100 bits, for the reason you gave, but the internet contains 1000, so now each person only knows 10%, which is less than 50.
Individuals know more, but the total knows much more.

      1. thehiddeninja

        I’ve thought of something better!
In the past, the average person knew how all technology works. They knew 100%
Now, most people *don’t* know how most technology works, like circuitry, thermo-dynamics, GPS etc. We know, say, 20%.
We now know 20%, while people used to know 100%.
This isn’t because we know less, we actually know more
It’s because there’s a lot more technology that someone could possibly know.

    2. Totally Not Crazy Dave

Hmm… there is a paradox a bit similar to the one thought of here. Ot’s called Braess’s paradox (according to Wikipedia, it’s not Braess’ paradox). It states that any alternations to a road will actually slow down the movement of the road, because since each driver is making the optimal decision for himself, a shortcut will be quickly clogged and thus will (most of the time) not be a shortcut. You can find the Wikipedia article here…

Hey Jesse, are you going to start up your Patreon again? I was thinking of donating, but i cant find the page anywhere! 🙁 How am i supposed to help you not be poor?

    1. Firstly let me say I really appreciate it! I closed the Patreon when I first put the comic on hiatus, and since then I haven’t felt comfortable that I would be able to deliver comics consistently enough / have enough support to warrant opening it up again. That may change in the near future – at least I hope it will!

My one question at this point…Is what are Sophia and Gus doing, wherever they even are…?
