About
What is The Legend of Maxx?
The Legend of Maxx is a sprite comic that I make in my spare time. It chronicles the life of Maxx, the player character of a game of Terraria, and the various shenanigans and/or existential crises that he and his followers get up to and/or experience.
What is Terraria?
Terraria is an awesome indie game by Re-Logic that blends elements of platformers, action RPGs, and sandbox games such as Minecraft. You can read more about it here and also here. You can also buy it on pretty much any platform that has ever existed!
Why Terraria? Why this comic?
This comic started as a personal project of mine– I wanted to see if I’d be any good at making a sprite comic, and since I was hopelessly addicted to Terraria at the time, it seemed like a good choice. I started by posting the comics to the forums at Terraria Online, and thanks to the supportive community there eventually reached a point where I wanted to make my own site! And here we are.
How often do you update?
The Legend of Maxx currently updates Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
How do you make the comics?
My setup is pretty rudimentary– I grab screenshots from in-game and import them into good old MS Paint, adding sprites and text boxes later; sometimes, I use Photoshop or Gimp to add a special effect to a panel. I draw some sprites on my own, and often tweak the original sprites to get new poses/ expressions/ colours/ etc.
How long does it take to make a comic?
In the early days, 4-panel comics that I already had the assets for only took about 45 minutes. These days, comics tend to be longer and almost always include custom sprites, so the minimum is closer to 2-3 hours. If the comic requires in-game building, new character poses, entirely new sprites or– worst of all– lots of Photoshoppy action, then it can easily take an entire day. The time it takes to write the script is also highly variable, since some scripts come together perfectly and others need to be agonized over.
I’d like to use some Legend of Maxx characters / objects / concepts in my Terraria mod / fanfiction / art class lecture. Is that ok?
Sure! My only two stipulations are one, that you don’t try to make money off of anything related to the comic, and two, that you give credit to the source material– both myself and Re-Logic. Provided you do that, go wild!
I’d like to contact you / follow you somehow!
If you have any questions, concerns or random thoughts you’d like to share, I can be reached at jesse@legendofmaxx.com.
My twitter can be found here and the Legend of Maxx Facebook page can be found here!
Also, here’s my YouTube channel. It’s not related to Legend of Maxx at all, though I occasionally post videos about games and other such nonsense.
How do I get a custom profile picture for the comment section?
The comment section uses Gravatar for its profiles. If you’d like to create an account or change your personal information, such as your picture, head on over to gravatar.com and make the changes there! They’ll automatically update on this site provided you log in with your Gravatar credentials.
Some legal stuff
I’m sure I don’t need to tell you this, but I do not own Terraria or any of the Terraria pixel art that I use in the comics– that is the property of the people at Re-Logic and they deserve recognition for their hard work.
Some thanks
Thanks to all the people who have supported and continue to support the comic! That means the people at Terraria Online, the friends, both online and off, who let me know what they thought of the comic, and my girlfriend for pre-approving the comics and occasionally writing a funnier joke than I did. You guys are awesome!
