I hate those kinds of curses. I always feel like there should be a way to beat them. When I was a kid, I spent half an hour climbing the endless staircase in Super Mario 64 thinking that it must end eventually.

I’mnot sure how I got 73, but I didn’t need a calculator. Just count up, realise it’s pretty much 100, subtract however many letters aren’t in caps. But that’s only based on the assumption of there being 100 letters and making an assumption is the birth of all cock-ups.

The obvious solution is to go out one side, then turn around

Or they could convince the captain to join them as clearly this curse center’s around him or at least he is able to dispel the curse. Undead Vikings as allies? That sounds awesome actually. Heck… they could say they are going to pillage the Naiad’s place to convince them to go with.
